Discovering the story of The Giving Tree, students will explore the main idea through summarizing/sequencing the story. Connecting to the main idea of “giving,” students will explore the artistry of trees in order to create their own tree that “gives”. In addition, students will connect elements of movement through positions of yoga and use it to create a narrative performance task, as well as a guide to “warming up” each of the day’s activities. This module investigates what trees can provide, as well as compares and contrasts similar books by different authors. The seasons of trees will be extended upon, utilizing the yoga tree pose as representation in different ways, related to the varying “seasons” of the tree.

Before you begin...Each Artful Reading Module is flexibly designed for a 2-3 week duration. Lessons are marked for Before-, During-, or After-Reading to guide your planning. We have added a sample of an After-Reading lesson entitled Vocabulary Trees for you to preview. Each lesson is formatted on a Teacher Lesson Card so you have all the information you need at your fingertips when it’s time to deliver.
