Miss Rumphius is a story about a young girl whose grandfather inspired her to do three things in life: go to faraway places, live by the sea, and do something to make the world more beautiful. Her love of lupines inspired her to plant lupines all throughout her town, and therefore she becomes known as The Lupine Lady. In the end, she leaves her own niece with a challenge to make the world more beautiful, and in turn, inspires her readers to do the same.
Miss Rumphius is the 1983 National Book Award for Children's Books. The National Education Association named the book one of its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children." In 2012 it was ranked # 13 among the "Top 100 Picture Books" by School Library Journal.
