Heart on Fire will take students on Susan B. Anthony's journey to fight for equality at the ballot box and the legacy she left for future generations. Students will learn about the story and events that led to the Nineteenth Amendment and why it is important to ensure every vote counts. They’ll even have the opportunity to cultivate a legacy of their own for future classes!

Before you begin...

Each Artful Reading Module is flexibly designed for a 2-3 week duration. Lessons are marked for Before-, During-, or After-Reading to guide your planning. We have added a sample of a During Reading lesson entitled A Splash of Red for you to preview. Each lesson is designed in an easy to read format, with standards, materials needed, and step-by-step directions to ensure you are fully prepared when it’s time to deliver.

By the end of the module, students will be able to: 

  • Apply civic virtues when participating in school setting
  • Explain how a democracy relies on people's responsible participation
  • Use deliberative processes when making decisions or reaching judgments
  • Illustrate historical and contemporary means of changing society

Summative Writing tasks serve as an end-of-unit assessment, and include options for narrative, informational and opinion/persuasive writing. Students are able to reflect on and pull from their learning experiences throughout the module to complete the writing task. Optional Extension Tasks are also available to stretch the module further.
