Flood is a wordless picture book that uses watercolors to illustrate the effects of a flood on a family and their home. This module invites students to enter into discussion about floods and other external and internal circumstances that can affect their lives. Students will be equipped with coping skills to access when they may be feeling blue. A study of idioms will enrich students’ language skills! Students will also build their art skills as they explore Picasso’s personal Blue Period and other artists who use the color blue to evoke different shades of emotions.
Before you begin...
Each Artful Reading Module is flexibly designed for a 2-3 week duration. Lessons are marked for Before-, During-, or After-Reading to guide your planning. We have added a sample of an After Reading lesson entitled Hindsight is 20/20 for you to preview. The summative writing tasks will invite students into a PBL experience. While conducting self and group initiated research, the compelling question students will explore is How might we share some stress coping strategies? Optional Extension Tasks are also available to stretch the module further.
